Buying a Double Buggy From Birth
There are plenty of things to consider when selecting the perfect double buggy from the moment of birth. We spoke to Fourth Trimester postnatal retreat expert Katie Billingsley for her advice on everything from seating options, age ranges to folding mechanisms and storage space.
A must-have purchase for active families This buggy will grow with your family from twins through to toddlers. It's light and easy to maneuver and is able to tackle uneven terrain with ease.
What kind of buggy do want?
Double buggys are ideal for transporting two children at the same time, even if they are not of the same age. They can also function as prams. Each seat comes with an adjustable mechanism that allows your children can lie down or sit in various positions. Many have ample storage for everything from snacks and drinks to wipes and nappies. They are often lightweight they fold easily and are compact enough to fit into your car's boot. If you drive a great amount, you should make sure that the buggy be easily pushed around by folding the wheels into your car boot, and then removed.
The most popular type of double buggy is the side-by-side, which you've likely seen on other moms pushchairs, or perhaps ridden in as a kid. These are great for older siblings who want to keep up with you or for twins. They usually have numerous seating options (including 'cinema' seats) for your little ones to choose from. They are generally easy to navigate, and if you opt for a model with a soft suspension, they will easily navigate the kerbs.
double pram and pushchair are another popular option because they're easier to turn than a side-by-side. This is because the second seat sits behind the first, instead of on top of it. They're usually wider than a side-by-side and can be a bit bulky when folded, so it's essential to make sure they be able to pass through doors and public transport. They can be used to transport twins or a toddler and a baby or three kids with the addition of a buggy board.
Lastly there are the'single-to-double' convertibles which can be used as a single pushchair from birth then convert to a double by attaching a second seat, carrycot or car seat to their clever frame. They tend to be more expensive than side-by-sides and tandem buggies, but they offer a lot of flexibility and a high resale value. They're generally simple to steer, feature large storage bins and are able to handle uneven surfaces. Some models even come with an integrated ride-on board that can be used as "cinema seating" for your older child.
Do you have twins?
Double buggys are the best way to transport your children, regardless of whether they are twins or older siblings. There are two main types of double buggy - side-byside buggies that let your children sit in a row, side-by-side or tandem buggies where one child is higher than the other. Both buggies are able to accommodate two seats fixed. However side-by-side buggies are smaller to be able to pass through doors. Tandems are typically larger overall. They can also accommodate a carrycot as well as a toddler seats.
Do you have children?
At first, having a younger sibling could feel like a lot of responsibility, especially if you are also caring for the infant. A double buggy can also make it easier for them to feel a sense of belonging if you place them in a baby carrier and push the older child. It can also provide your child with an immense sense of pride when they are able to be 'big brother or sister' and help them get used to their role.
Side-by-side double buggies are usually considered the best option for twins because they allow both children to enjoy the same view, but they can be bulky and heavy. The Leclerc B-AGILE DUAL is a sleek double buggy with an innovative frame which expands widthways and can accommodate two fixed seats. It also provides a variety of configuration options including using the second seat to create the bassinet.
Alternatively, we recommend the Mountain Buggy Double Trailblazer for active families who like to explore. This innovative buggy is a single pushchair which can be made a double by adding a second seat or carrycot (depending on the model). Its super-smooth ride is ideal for rough terrain and it comes with a variety of thoughtful features to ensure that everyone is happy.
Do you require an effective business travel system?
Double buggies can be a great way to transport your children in a comfortable way. However, they are not necessary for every family. Based on your lifestyle and the age gap between your kids, you may be able to do using a single stroller with some attachments, such as toddler harnesses and baby carriers that let you carry your child on their backs or in front of you.
There are three types of double buggies: tandem, side-by-side, and convertible. Side-by-side buggies come with two seats near each other, which means your children will be able to see each one another. They are larger than a single stroller and aren't easy to maneuver over the kerbs. Tandem buggies are a compact option, with one seat at the front and another at the back. However they can be quite heavy and difficult to push.
Convertible double buggies allow you to transform one stroller into a double buggy by securing an infant car seat to the frame. This way, you can keep your infant snuggled safely in their car seat until they're ready for a move into the main buggy seat. The UPPAbaby Vista V2 is a great example of this. It's suitable for twins or a toddler or even three kids with the addition of the optional PiggyBack board.

As your children grow older and more capable to walk, you can opt for a double buggy to take them to bike rides or day excursions where they may prefer walking. It is important to keep in mind that your kids may not always like to be in a stroller and could get tired and angry when they are on longer excursions.
Before you decide to invest in a double buggy at the time of birth be sure to think about the above points and your family's specific circumstances. A sturdy and reliable double stroller can simplify life, especially if you need to travel through busy streets or crowded shopping centres.
